Foudation for Rural Service (FRS) Scholarships

2024 FRS Scholarship Applications ARE OPEN

The foundation annually awards scholarships to an exceptional group of rural students for their first year of college or vocational school. FRS has awarded over $1 million in scholarships since its inception, empowering rural students throughout the country to advance their communities with invaluable skill sets and experiences.

 

The Foundation for Rural Services (FRS) annually awards graduating high school seniors $2,500 in scholarships across rural America by region.  These scholarships are each matched by NTCA–The Rural Broadband Associations’ members – like Red River Communications – to the scholarship winner within their community.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Be a graduating high school senior
  • Be a United States citizen
  • Be sponsored by a current NTCA–The Rural Broadband Association member – such as Red River Communications – applicant’s parent or guardian must have telephone or internet service with Red River Communications.
  • Complete the online application.
  • Express an interest in returning to a rural community following graduation

 

What is included in the application?

  • A 500-800 word essay about your intended study area and how it could benefit your rural community. Proofread your essay before submitting it because the essay is the most important part of the application.
  • Email addresses for two people who can provide a letter of recommendation. Only one of these people may be a teacher, counselor, or educator.
  • High school transcript with seven semesters. It does not need to be an official copy.
  • The correct name of the NTCA member company (Red River Communications -Red River Rural Telephone Association) that will sponsor your application.

The application process is entirely digital, so be sure you are qualified and have all the materials to upload to complete your application.

Applications close on February 16, 2024, and will be announced in May 2024.

All scholarship awards are paid directly to the educational institution.

One Application – Multiple FRS Scholarships

One application qualifies students for several scholarships. Submitting one application is sufficient for eligibility for all available scholarships.

  • FRS General Scholarship $2,500 awarded for the first year of 2-year or 4-year college or vocational school.
  • Everett Kneece Scholarship
    $7,000 awarded in honor of the generous philanthropist Everett Kneece, who had a passion for rural America. Herbert and Isabel Bitz Memorial Scholarship
    $5,000 to one individual who exhibits a strong dedication to rural America.
  • JSI Scholarship
    $5,000 awarded to individuals interested in science, math, medicine, or engineering.
  • Sarah Tyree Good Neighbor Scholarship
    $5,000 awarded to students who demonstrate what it means to be a
    “good neighbor” through humanitarianism, inclusion, and kindness to others.
  • Cronin Communications Scholarship
    $2,500 awarded thanks to the generosity of the Timothy Evan Owens Foundation.
  • Diana Jo Dreyer Memorial Scholarship
    $2,500 awarded thanks to the generosity of INDATEL Services LLC to a woman who intends to study business.

Applications will be accepted until February 16, 2024.                                       

James L. Bass Legal Scholarship 2024

 

Scholarship for those entering their first year of law school.

 

With an active law career that spanned more than 70 years, James Bass helped secure funds for rural telephone systems to bring modern telephone service to rural areas. He was pivotal in the creation of NTCA – The Rural Broadband Association, where he served as one of the organization’s earliest Presidents. Mr. Bass continued his leadership with service for more than 50 years as legal counsel, guiding NTCA through many challenges and opportunities.

Recognizing Mr. Bass’s impact on the industry and his passion for the legal profession, the NTCA Board established a scholarship for students entering their first year of law school and who have an interest in rural communities.

The James L. Bass Legal Scholarship will be awarded in the spring of 2024 and will be worth at least $5,000.
