How to Clear Your Firestick’s Cache (And Why It Matters)

If your Amazon Firestick has started feeling sluggish—apps taking forever to open, menus lagging, or Netflix buffering more than it should—a buildup of cached data is often the culprit. The good news is clearing it out takes just a few minutes and can make a noticeable difference. Here’s how to do it.

Why Cache Builds Up

Every app on your Firestick stores temporary files to help it load faster next time. Over weeks and months, this cache piles up, eating into your device’s limited storage and, ironically, slowing things down instead of speeding them up. Firesticks have modest onboard storage compared to smart TVs or streaming boxes, so this problem tends to show up sooner rather than later.

Clear Cache for a Specific App

If one app in particular is misbehaving, start here:

  1. From the Fire TV home screen, go to Settings.
  2. Select Applications.
  3. Choose Manage Installed Applications.
  4. Pick the app that’s giving you trouble (Netflix, YouTube, Hulu, etc.).
  5. Select Clear Cache.

This wipes out temporary files without touching your login info or saved preferences, so you won’t need to sign back in.

Clear Cache for All Apps at Once

If your whole device feels sluggish rather than just one app, it’s worth clearing cache across the board:

  1. Go to Settings > Applications > Manage Installed Applications.
  2. Go through your most-used apps one by one and select Clear Cache for each.

Unfortunately, Fire OS doesn’t offer a true “clear all” button, so this is a bit manual—but focusing on the 4-5 apps you use most will handle the bulk of the buildup.

Restart Your Firestick

After clearing cache, a simple restart helps flush out any lingering background processes:

  1. Go to Settings > My Fire TV (or Device on some models).
  2. Select Restart.

A Few Extra Tips

  • Uninstall apps you don’t use. Fewer apps means less cache accumulating in the background.
  • Check your storage. Under Settings > My Fire TV > About > Network, you can see storage details and spot when you’re running low.
  • Do this monthly. A quick cache clear every few weeks prevents the slowdown from creeping back.

Clearing your cache is one of the easiest ways to keep your Firestick running like new. It costs nothing, takes only a few minutes, and can save you from an unnecessary factory reset down the road.
