Wi-Fi and internet are sometimes used interchangeably in everyday conversation, but they are not the same thing. In the context of Red River Communications’ services, FiberFAST Internet service is the wired connection to your home, and FiberFAST Wi-Fi is the wireless connection within your home.

Keep in mind, your devices’ capabilities also impact your ability to achieve your maximum available internet speed. Your Red River Wi-Fi router also allows you to connect devices to the internet wirelessly. Be aware, Wi-Fi can sometimes have interferences, slowing down the speed of your connection.

Historically, Internet Service Providers (ISPs) have only provided and supported wired connectivity up to the outside of the home, leaving the Wi-Fi connection within the home solely up to the customer to purchase, set up, manage, maintain, and fix when troubles arise. That pain point led us to offer our premium, whole-home, managed, mesh Wi-Fi system called FiberFAST Ultimate Wi-Fi. Because providing the best internet and Wi-Fi experience to you, our customer, is our #1 priority.

Wi-Fi 6 is the latest generation of Wi-Fi technology, and it comes standard with our Ultimate Wi-Fi service. Previous Wi-Fi generations (most routers made before 2021) had limited speed; even if a customer had a 1 Gig Internet connection, they would experience slower speeds due to the limitations of using outdated router technology.

With our Wi-Fi 6-enabled Ultimate Wi-Fi service, you’ll maximize your Internet connection and say goodbye to buffering, lagging, and freezing—even when everyone in the house is online.

Many factors can affect your Wi-Fi connection and your speed. Here are some tips to optimize both:
  • Wireless Router Placement: Our expert technicians ensure that your router is placed in a central location in your home, off the floor, and away from metal objects.
  • Range Matters: Stay within range of your router. Typically, the closer you are the better the signal. Our technicians ensure you have excellent Wi-Fi coverage throughout your home, but if something changes (a large appliance is added to a room it was not in previously, the home is remodeled or added onto, you decide you’d like coverage on your outdoor patio, etc.), you may need an additional mesh Wi-Fi extender for $5.95/mo. Give us a call, and our Customer Experience Team will be happy to help.
  • Running Interference: Reduce the number of items placed directly next to or around your router and avoid using other wireless devices (like baby monitors or cordless phones) that operate on the same frequency.
  • Use a Modern Router: Wi-Fi 6 is the latest generation of Wi-Fi technology, and it comes standard with our Ultimate Wi-Fi service. Previous Wi-Fi generations limited speed; even if a customer had a 1 Gig Internet connection, they would experience slower speeds due to the limitations of using outdated router technology. With our Wi-Fi 6-enabled Ultimate Wi-Fi service, you’ll maximize your Internet connection and say goodbye to buffering, lagging, and freezing—even when everyone in the house is online.
  • Size and Coverage: It is crucial to have enough Wi-Fi coverage for the size and building style of your home. If you have a large and/or multi-level home, it may be necessary to add additional mesh Wi-Fi extenders to fill in the Wi-Fi coverage gaps or expand coverage. It is also important to consider the building style and material make-up of your home. If your home has plaster and lath walls or concrete floors, additional Wi-Fi extenders may be necessary for $5.95/mo. Give us a call, and our technicians will be happy to help.
  • Devices: Make sure your devices are equipped with Gigabit-compatible network cards and that all devices are clear of malware, extra program and app clutter and Internet browsers don’t have toolbars or add-ons slowing down your connection.
  • Order the Internet Speed You Need: To ensure you get the best Wi-Fi experience, keep in mind the more devices that are accessing your Wi-Fi network at one time, the more speed you need to accommodate them. “Overloading” your Wi-Fi network by trying to use more downstream (or upstream) speed than what you subscribe to may result in devices appearing to slow down or freeze and video streaming to buffer continually. Which Internet speed is right for you? Check out our Internet Page or contact our Support Team for a custom speed recommendation.

At installation, our technicians ensure excellent Wi-Fi coverage throughout your home. If something changes, though (e.g., a large appliance is added to a room it was not in previously, the home is remodeled or added onto, you decide you’d like coverage on your outdoor patio, etc.), you may need an additional mesh Wi-Fi extender for $5.95/mo.

Additionally, if you have a large and/or multi-level home, it may be necessary to add additional mesh Wi-Fi extenders to fill in the Wi-Fi coverage gaps or expand coverage. It is also important to consider the building style and material used to build your home. If your home has plaster and lath walls or concrete floors, additional Wi-Fi extenders may be necessary. Give us a call, and our technicians will be happy to help.

You can upgrade or replace an existing GigaSpire unit from the My Network screen.

Guidelines

  • Your service provider must remotely initiate router replacement sessions from Calix Service Cloud. If you plan to swap your GigaSpire, contact your service provider prior to completing a replacement.
  • Guided router replacement currently supports swaps from a GigaSpire to a GigaSpire only.
  • The QR-code scanning function requires a camera with auto-focus.

To replace a router

  1. From the Home screen, tap on the My Network tile.
  2. Tap the plus sign and select Replace Router.
  3. On the Scan device screen, input the router’s MAC address and serial number using one of the following methods:
    • Scan QR code:
      1. Point the camera viewfinder at the QR code printed on the router’s product label, located on the bottom of the unit.
      2. Center the QR code in the middle of the viewfinder frame, and then zoom in or out until the QR code fills the frame and the camera automatically captures the identifier information (where the MAC address and serial number values auto-populate into the respective fields upon capture). After the capture occurs, proceed to setup. If the capture fails after multiple attempts, use the manual type-in method.
    • Type:
      1. From the Scan device screen, tap Manually Enter Device Details.
      2. Select your router model from the Model drop-down menu.
      3. Tap the MAC Address field, and then type in the router’s MAC address as seen on the label on the bottom of the unit.
      4. Tap the Serial Number field, and then type in the router’s serial number as seen on the label on the bottom of the unit.
      5. Tap Start Setup.

  6. Follow the on-screen instructions to plug in your new router, then tap Next.
  7. Follow the on-screen instructions to connect an ethernet cable, then tap Next.
  8. Follow the on-screen instructions to confirm a successful connection, then tap Next. For common troubleshooting tips, tap I don’t see a green light.
  9. On the Setup Wi-Fi screen, tap the Network Name (SSID) field, and then type in a name for your Wi-Fi network. This name value is what Wi-Fi client devices will see when they scan for available Wi-Fi networks.
  10. Tap the Password field and enter the password for the wireless network.
  11. Tap the Security Type selection list to select a security option for the Wi-Fi network:
    • WPA2-Personal
    • WPA – WPA2-Personal
