After over 12 years of planning and construction, Red River Communications has completed a massive fiber-to-the-home project that brings gigabit internet to rural residents.
The project, which connects the cooperative’s nearly 4,000 members, began in 2004. Over 2,200 miles of fiber optic cabling has been installed across a service area that encompasses nearly 1,500 square miles across southeastern North Dakota and west-central Minnesota.
“Many employees, past and present, have been working feverishly to complete this project,” General Manager/CEO Jeff Olson said. “We are very proud of the work our employees have done over the years to see this project through to completion.”
As part of this project, Red River Communications was named a certified Gig Capable provider by NTCA – the Rural Broadband Association. This distinction puts Red River Communications in an elite group of providers capable of delivering gigabit internet service to its members. Through its FiberFAST internet, members can receive internet speeds up to a gigabit anywhere in Red River Communications’ service area.
“We’ve heard from numerous families who were drawn to our area because of the phenomenal connectivity we offer,” noted Member Support Manager Dirk Monson. “Access to reliable, fiber optic broadband has been shown to have a positive effect on property valuations. Broadband is essential to keeping our rural communities vibrant and prosperous.”
A celebration, the FiberFAST Festival, will be held on June 15 from 4:30pm to 7:30pm at the Red River Communications’ office in Abercrombie to mark the completion of the project. Food, door prizes, and entertainment are planned for the occasion. Dignitaries will be on hand to offer remarks. The public is encouraged to attend.
