I’ve heard there are grants to allow you to serve other areas. How come you don’t serve my area?

The grants you are referring to are part of the MN Border to Border Broadband Grant program that has been in place now for a few years. The B2B program is intended for area’s like yours that are either unserved or underserved with broadband. We did apply to receive grant money in 2016 but, unfortunately, were not selected to receive any funding.

The funding within the program is very competitive, as many small companies like ours are looking for funding from the program to build out broadband services to rural MN. The applications are based on a points system, there are components within each application that help to score certain projects higher than others (project area unserved, speeds that funded projects will provide, anchor institutions, etc).

The MN state legislature recently approved $20 million for the grant program in 2017. We are reviewing our application from last year, the notification letter from the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development as to why were not selected and will decide in the near future if we will apply for funding again in 2017.
